Fly Fishing Canada

From Coast To Coast To Coast

Outdoor Writers of Canada, Edited by Robert H. Jones
Revewed by: Bob Kloskowski
W When I first read the title of this book I must confess that I was very skeptical that any book of less than 500 hundred pages would be able to divulge much of anything about the fly fishing in a country the size of Canada in so few pages. But no where in this book does it mention that this is the complete book of Fly Fishing Canada from Coast to Coast to Coast and the readers shouldn’t expect it to be. It is instead the collaboration of 33 contributors, the Outdoor Writers of Canada, who have come up with a volume that I believe will be used as a reference book by fly fishers planning to fly fish in Canada for years to come.
Each of the 33 contributing authors has written more than one chapter detailing an area with which they are most familiar. In most chapters they describe at least one productive method to fish in that area . They go on to describe the species and their favorite most productive fly patterns for that region.
From George Will’s chapter called “Flatlands Jackpot” which describes some fantastic float tube fishing for monster browns within easy striking distance of Winnipeg to George Gruenefeld’s chapter “Ouananiche !” detailing some interesting information about land locked salmon, I found most chapters absorbing.
Thirty one pages of photos create a "Photo Journey" from Newfoundland to the Northwest Territories in Chapter 4.
Throughout the book are several interesting recipes to enhance the enjoyment of your catch. “Larry Salamon’s Smoked Goldeye Spread” which the author’s proclaim to be “One of Canada’s most famous delicacies” is of particular interest to me.
A hundred fifty fly pattern recipes are detailed along with color photo’s of each fly from tying the Tom Thumb to the Black and Gold Chironomid. A seventeen page directory of Fishing Shops completes this information packed volume. A must read for anyone exploring the fishing opportunities that Canada has to offer.
