Build Your Own Leaders
Bob Kloskowski
I do most
of my fly fishing on the Spring Creeks of Southwest Montana, Wyoming and
Idaho. For the most part this is challenging, demanding and yet very
enjoyable fishing requiring long fine leaders that turn over easily and
present the fly in a gentle, delicate manner. I've found the following
recipe for a leader to fill all of my needs with the bonus of being very
inexpensive.
You will
need to purchase three spools of leader material for the basic leader. Be
sure to purchase Maxima Chameleon material because it has the proper
stiffness for this leader system.
A. One
spool of Maxima Chameleon 15 lb .015 inch tippet material
B. One
spool of Maxima Chameleon 8 lb. 0.10 inch tippet material.
C. One
spool of Maxima Chameleon 6 lb. 0.009 inch tippet material.
For the
first section of leader you will need to cut:
A. 4 feet
of the Maxima .015 inch Chameleon
For the
second section of leader you will need to cut:
B. 1 foot
of the Maxima 0.10 inch Chameleon
For the
third section of leader you will need to cut:
C. 4 feet
of the Maxima 0.009 inch Chameleon
1. Attach
section A to section B using a Barrel Knot or Blood Knot.
2. Attach
section B to section C using a Barrel Knot or Blood Knot.
To this I
usually attach 1 foot of my favorite 3X tippet material then at least 4
feet of 6 X or 7 X Fluorocarbon tippet material using a Barrel Knot or
Blood Knot for all connections. New tippets or changes in the diameter of
tippet material can be easily made streamside directly to the 1 foot
section of 3X tippet material using a double Surgeon's Knot.
End.
